Gizmo5

Gizmo is a universal IM, VoIP, SMS and file sharing program compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux, and most mobile phone operating system. Simply install the Gizmo client onto your device or computer to start making internet calls, send instant messaging (MSN, AIM, Yahoo! and Jabber for free) and more. With a WLAN connection you can use the full set of features – and IM and Presence are available even when you are connected over 2G or 3G.

Gizmo5 is ideal for small business voip. They are a very reliable VoIP service provider and provides a reasonably cheap voip rates among the competitors.

Fring – Community Based VoIP

fring is the industry first Symbian S60 mobile VoIP software, unlike others, fring is more of a community based mobile internet service that enables you to access & interact with your social networks on-the-go, make free calls and live chat with all your fring, Skype, MSN Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ, SIP, Twitter, Yahoo! and AIM friends using your handset’s internet connection.

Beyond fring’s social appeal, it also saves money letting you make affordable local and international calls to landline and regular cellular numbers using your SkypeOut/SkypeIn account or almost any internet voice service (SIP) such as SIPNET, EuteliaVoIP, VoIPVoIP and VoIPTalk, even from non-SIP enabled handsets. What’s more, fring does all the work for you, automatically logging you into your favorite WiFi hotspots so you save time and hassle without having to configure your WiFi access points each time.

The only drawback on fring’s VoIP software is it does not have its own network to do VoIP call. It uses other network, such as Skype, Gizmo, thus making it uncompetitive in term of VoIP rates.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic seems to have it all - large 3.2" touchscreen display, 3G and Wi-Fi support and even a GPS receiver aboard. The cute Nokia 5530 XpressMusic kept only the Wi-Fi, its display shrank to 2.9 inches and the battery capacity was decreased to 1000 mAh but the device costs considerably less than its smarter bro. Then the 5230 was introduced. And now we've got some live shots of it.

Nokia 5230 official photos

When it comes to the recently announced Nokia 5230, the situation with the specs is only a tad different. It shares the same design and touchscreen with the 5800 XpressMusic and just like it comes with a built-in GPS receiver, 3G capabilities and a promising 1320 mAh Li-Ion battery. There is no support for Wi-Fi, though, and instead of the 3.15 autofocus snapper of 5800 XpressMusic you'll get a 2-megapixel fixed focus one. Well, at least it can take VGA videos at 30 fps.

And here are the live images of Nokia 5230 we told you about just a second ago. Some of the color versions are missing but the red and the blue ones are here, posing just for us. Take a peep.

Live shots of Nokia 5230

Even if our source predicts that the Nokia 5230 will hit the market some time in January 2010, we believe that the actual launch will take part sooner than expected - Nokia promised that the device will become available during the last quarter of this year. By the way, Nokia 5230 showed up on the Italian operator TIM online shop page several days ago and the price they set is 189 euro. Not bad, huh?

A lot of people depend on their mobile phones in every aspect of their lives, from talking to family and friends to business, from emailing and texting to playing games. When someone is so reliant on their mobile phone for almost everything they do, it will be quite aggravating when their mobile phone's battery dies at the time they need their phone, not to mention in an emergency. I will tell you a few tips and tricks to extend your mobile phone battery's life and make it last longer.

1. The easiest and most effective way to preserve your mobile phone's charge is to switch your phone off when not in use. When you're going to bed, or going to work and are not planning on answering your mobile phone, just switch it off.

2. Try not to put up wallpapers. They might be nice and cool to look at - but you won't be saying that when you need your phone and you can't switch it on because the battery is drained. Wallpapers use a lot of energy and power so by not using them it will increase battery life. Why not just put a nice picture up instead?

3. Turn off your Bluetooth when you're not using it. Bluetooth uses up a LOT of your battery life so if you aren't using it just switch it off. Or, switch to a regular corded headset, because they use less power. Also, leaving your Bluetooth on when not using it allows hackers to just hack into your phone, which you don't really want.

4. Only use your ringer OR the vibrate function for calls, but avoid using them both at the same time. A lot of battery power can be lost by using the vibrate function alone, so using both can put an overwhelming drain on your battery.

5. Turn down the brightness of your screen. The screen sucks a tremendous amount of power from your battery, just like the screens on laptops. Visit your phone's settings menu to find the screen controls and lower the brightness to increase battery life.

6. Try not to play games, scroll through pictures or watch videos too often, as these functions use a lot of power. This is especially important when you know you'll have to wait a long while to charge your phone.

7. Charge your mobile phone less often as charging when you don't need to (say, when the battery is at 50%) will reduce the battery's capacity. On average, cell phone charge lasts about 3 days so it is unnecessary to charge more often than about 3 days, depending on your phone of course.

8. Try to avoid playing music without earphones. When you listen to music make sure you are listening through earphones and not just through the phone. Playing music without earphones will decrease battery life faster than when you listen music with earphones as your phone uses more energy and power to play the music without earphones.

If the title makes you think that Microsoft is about to launch a whole new line of self-branded smartphones in October, think again. In fact the buzz is simply about Windows Mobile 6.5, the new touch-friendly mobile OS by Microsoft, which shall be coming to phones in October this year.

Perhaps a new strategy by Microsoft is to advertise the devices that run on its mobile OS platform as Windows Phones instead of labelling them as the traditional Windows Mobile phones. Now this might be a good thing in the sense that since most of the rebranded products and services by Microsoft have gone quite successful so far, this one might too.

Though we do appreciate the new features in the updated version of Windows mobile OS and that Microsoft has done its best at providing a more touch-friendly experience in the new UI, making one less dependent on the stylus culture.

Apart from the touch-friendliness, we expect to see the Windows Marketplace which is a one-stop place to shop for apps, support for MyPhone backup service and a new Office Mobile.

Earlier there have been quite a few rumors about Nokia entering the Netbook market but until now, the debate was nothing more than a piece of wind-talk. However, this morning Nokia announced that it will soon be shipping a new product which it calls as the Nokia Booklet 3G and from what it looks like, its more than just a Netbook.

Interestingly! Nokia itself is hesitating to brand this machine as a Netbook and goes on by calling it as a mini-laptop. Though we definitely would like to support Nokia on this as this device is more powerful and efficient than a regular netbook, even though it bears the guts of an Intel Atom processor which is now a standard for Netbook devices.

Below are some of the detailed features of the Nokia Booklet 3G.

  • Intel Atom Processor on the back-end.
  • A Windows-based machine running Windows 7.
  • Glass display of 10.1 inches with HD display.
  • Battery life up to 12-hours.
  • Integrated 3G wireless and WiFi.
  • A-GPS, webcam, Bluetooth and SD card reader.

So basically you can think of it as something between a smartphone and a laptop, but still its impressive.

No word yet on the price and availability of the device but I guess we will be seeing more of it at Nokia World 09 on September 2nd, along with the detailed specifications and probably even a preview.

Good news from the iPhone Dev Team tells us that the new version of Redsnow, the multi-platform unlocking tool for the iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G, now also works with the iPhone 3GS.

An unlock tool for the iPhone 3GS has been much anticipated by Apple fans since its release and even though there was a tool named Purplerain to unlock the iPhone 3GS, the fact that it wasn't backup up by the iPhone Dev Team didn't bring relief to many hearts.

However! The new Redsnow fully supports unlock for iPhone 3GS with any carrier running on iPhone 3.0 and can be downloaded at ThePirateBay.

Latest version is now dubbed as Redsnow 0.8. Once downloaded, follow the following steps:

1. Download the iPhone 3GS firmware provided by Apple [Part1 | Part2]
2. Extract the rar-archive with WinRar or UnrarX such that it makes up into one file.
3. Open Redsnow and follow the onscreen instructions to Jailbreak the device.
4. Once Jailbroken, fire-up Cydia and add repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com
5. Now search for 'Ultrasnow' and install it.
6. Restart your iPhone 3GS.

Now I don't really have an iPhone 3GS (at least for now?) but I am pretty sure this method will work out for most of you. Please let us know in the comments if it works.
